• For returning Sri Lankans and foreign residents, an annual allowance of USD 2,000 is provided, with quantity limits determined by Schedule 1 of the Extraordinary Gazette 2333/14 of 22nd May 2023. Purchases can be made within 4 days, inclusive of the First Date of Arrival (FDOA) and must be completed in a single visit. Any unused allowance expires within one year from the FDOA, and the permitted individual may bring one family member to assist in the process.
• Tourists, on the other hand, enjoy unlimited purchases with no quantity restrictions. Goods are conveniently collected at the airport upon departure, and tourists are free to shop across multiple visits during their stay in Sri Lanka. Only the permitted individual is allowed to collect the items.
• For Sri Lankans and foreign residents departing the country, there are no annual or quantity limits on duty-free purchases. Goods must be collected at the airport, and all purchases must be completed before the traveller’s date of departure. Only the permitted individual is eligible for these purchases.
• For Diplomats and diplomatic organisations allowances, quantity limits, visit frequencies, and other details are determined by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and communicated accordingly.
